The battle of Marathon, in 490 BC, was the first of a series of important battles fought by the Greek cities against the armies of the Persian Empire. For the Athenians, who faced almost alone the Persian invaders, with no essential assistance from other cities, this battle proved to be a landmark in their history.

This publication, through the words of the narrator Aristarchus, follows the political developments in the interior of the two adversaries and records important events of their history: the fall of the Pisistratids in Athens and the rise of Cleisthenes to power, which signals the establishment of democracy in the city; the expulsion of the tyrant Hippias and his role in the Persian court and the battle of Marathon; the creation of the Persian Empire with the subjection of Lydia, Babylon and the Greek cities of Asia Minor; the Ionian Revolt and the fall of Miletus; the landing of the Persians in the Aegean and the destruction of Cyclades and Euboia; the insurrection of Sparta and the interior political conflicts in Athens. The culminating point of the narration is the battle at the "plain of the fennels", where the reader is captivated by a moment by moment account of this historic battl
